Cambridge Imprint Hardcover Notebooks are inspired by the slim patterned German Insel-Bücherei books of the inter-war period - in the United Kingdom, King Penguins had a similar design, and later on Ladybird books shared the same format. These modern variations have plain cream interior papers sewn properly and bound into a slim, light hardback notebook that lays flat. Each one is covered in beautiful patterned paper using FSC certified paper and hand mixed, environmentally friendly inks in the UK.

The Details:
  • 1 hardcover notebook with rectangular cream label on front
  • 80 pages blank, cream paper
  • FSC certified paper
  • Hand mixed, environmentally friendly, vegetable oil based inks
  • Dimensions: 7.4'' H x 4.7'' W x 0.4'' D (18.7 x 12 x 1 cm)
  • Designed in Cambridge, Made in the UK

The Maker:

Cambridge Imprint is a design partnership and small paper making business of painter Claerwen James, textile artist Jane Powell, and ceramicist Ali Murphy based in Cambridge, England. They design and print patterned paper and are known for beautiful colors, joyful illustrations, fun typography, a lively & hand-drawn aesthetic, and meticulous attention to detail. They use simple hand-stenciled screen-printing to create original designs, and spot-color lithography to replicate that studio process in the manufacturing of the final paper product. The result is a matte paper with unparalleled intensity and clarity of color. The patterns have a particularly English quality, with a palette that is somehow both sober and exuberant.

Virtually all Cambridge Imprint products are intentionally designed, manufactured, finished, and packaged in the UK. Their patterned paper is printed on a lithographic press by a long-established printers’ cooperative in Bethnal Green in London. It's printed on a matte uncoated stock using vegetable oil-based inks hand-mixed for each job, a process that closely mirrors the way the prototypes are produced in the Cambridge workshop. From Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent, through Bedfordshire and Suffolk and down into Devon, Cambridge Imprint's products are manufactured by various small English businesses with high levels of expertise and craftsmanship. A range of box-makers, book-binders, potteries, and textile printers to turn the gorgeous patterns and papers into enduring, resilient, beautiful, useful things!
